Energy Bill Reduction: Window Tinting

August 8, 2008 | 1 Comment

tip for buying a home in austin

Window tinting isn’t just for cars, did you know that you can drastically reduce your electric bill and keep your home cooler during our hot summers? You can do it yourself (read a hysterical tutorial here) if that’s your thing.

I’m not good at that kind of stuff, so I would also suggest that in your quest for your new home, it’s easy to have your windows tinted professionally before you move in, it takes a few hours and makes a big difference. I recently learned that the owner of Razor’s Edge in Cedar Park not only does car window tinting (and we’ve used him before and recommend him) but will come to your home to do your house windows!

$1.3 Billion Gas Pipeline to Texas

August 4, 2008 | Leave a Comment

original image courtesy of cinto2

As a follow-up to yesterday’s article regarding wind power coming to Texas, we learned that other changes are coming to the energy industry in Texas (according to the Houston Business Journal):

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a $1.34 billion natural gas pipeline project, which will be owned and operated by the joint venture firm Midcontinent Express Pipeline LLC.

The 500-mile pipeline system will pump natural gas extracted from highly prized shale deposits in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The first 40 miles of the system will begin in Lamar County, and are expected to be in service by the end of October. The entire first phase will be complete by February.

This summer has brought about a change in the attitude of policy makers and industry shakers and we anticipate there to be more changes on the way. The belts will losen up in light of energy prices and I suppose we’ll pay a few dollars more (to get the energy to our cities) in order to pay a few dollars less.

Starbucks Closings in Austin

July 19, 2008 | 1 Comment

austin real estate and starbucks closings

Starbucks’ National Closings

The recent news of Starbucks’ announcement of shutting the lights off in 600 of their stores across America has spooked many and buzz about it has echoed across the Internet. For years, many real estate speculators have looked to the deep pockets of companies like Starbucks’ research divisions for selecting store sites as indications of viable economic growth. Economists have watched their coffee prices as indicators of local economic success much commodities like gas, metals and others. With these store closings, people even locally are saying that it’s the armageddon. False.

Starbucks’ Texas Closings

According to Starbucks, Texas will be experiencing 57 store closures, two of which are in Austin (1007 South Congress and 5000 W. Slaughter) both nearby newly constructed Starbucks locations. To put that in perspective in the national scope, Texas only accounts for 9.5% of all closings and Austin only accounts for 0.3% of the closings nationally.

The Impact on Austin

How does this impact Austin? It doesn’t… that’s a tiny little blip; businesses open and close here every day, so for those measuring Austin’s economy based on coffee houses and prices, we’re still lookin’ pretty good (not to mention that within a mile of my personal home, two new Starbucks have had their grand openings in the past months).

This Week In Austin [Pictures]

What happened this week around Austin? Let’s let photos speak a thousand words (and I’ll add 1,001-1,050)!

Creepy Vendetta Guy

Someone dressed up as the creepy guy from “V is Vendetta” held protest signs on the capitol grounds and I don’t get it. But we give him a gold star for wearing full V garb in this hot weather!

keeping austin weird, one protester at a time!

The End of Concordia

Concordia University has moved their campuses north of Austin to the old Schlumberger site on 620 and the old campus is now being demolished as seen in this week’s image.

Wind Surfing on Lake Travis

This week has been breezy and hot, perfect for wind surfing on Lake Travis. This photo was taken at Bob Wentz Park (aka the “public side” of Windy Point).

windsurfing is fun. no punchline here.

Waiting for Bats

Austin is famous for the largest bat colony in America (perhaps the world?) that comes out to feed every night from under Congress bridge, filling the sky with a cloud of zippy black bird-looking bats. Sitting below in the Austin American-Statesman lawn or up above the bridge on the sidewalk, it’s a lot of fun to take the kiddos to see the mass exodus for nightly feedings.

buying a home in austin is like waiting for bats to come out- EXCITING! :)

Doggie

This dog played in the park. That’s news-worthy, right? No? Well, here’s a ridiculously cute dog playing in Austin anyhow.

Austin Is The Place To Live- Shopping Showcase

January 31, 2008 | Leave a Comment

shopping in austinShopping for real estate in Austin isn’t the only thing that’s hot here, Austin is famous for the amazingly diverse shopping options! Travel + Leisure magazine rated Austin the #4 best city for Vintage shopping- we suggest the SoCo district or the north and south ends of The Drag for the best vintage shopping. LA isnt’ where it’s happening, y’all!

Austin also ranks in the Top 25 for the following:
1. Antinque shopping- many of the suburbs offer amazing, hidden antique shops worth the weekend drive!
2. Shoe shopping- although it’s a chain store, I looove shopping for shoes at Nordstrom’s. For people who aren’t in their 20s and can’t wear 6″ wedge heels, Karavel shoes offers great comfort shoes that are actually in style.
3. Home design- there are endless home design stores in Austin and we love shopping, especially around the downtown Whole Foods area.
4. Luxury boutiques- you have to visit Davenport Village if you don’t want to show up at the party in the same dress she’s wearing!
5. Flea markets- I’ve heard they’re all over. Do you know of a good one? Let us know!

Austin is a place of diverse shopping meeting all of your needs ranging from a crazy hippie hat to a coture gown or even strange As Seen On TV items at the flea market. Where do you like to shop?

Austin Is The Place To Live- Underground Arts Scene

December 16, 2007 | 1 Comment

south congress art galleryAustin has so many draws and anyone that lives here (or has lived here) knows that a huge part of the Austin culture is underground.  Some of the best food can be found in a jumpin’ hole-in-the-wall, the coolest little club is on 3rd street, not 6th, the hip poetry slam is at a non-Starbuck’s and our underground arts scene is gaining fame.  Does it become over-ground once people know about it?  Hmmm…  Well, regardless, Travel & Leisure magazine named Austin the 3rd Best Underground Arts Scene in America, so be cool and go check out the annual East Austin tour, the 5th street gallery, 23rd Street Artist’s Market or even one of UT’s numerous museum galleries!

Austin Is The Place To Live- Weather

congress bridge photo by dan herronAustin Real Estate isn’t the only awesome thing about our city- so is the weather!  One of the most endearing thing about our city is the climate.  It gets hot in the summers but only enough to inspire lake living, not enough to melt your skin off.  It gets cool in the winter but only enough to inspire use of your fireplace, not enough to get hypothermia.  I have to tell those of you who aren’t living here yet that I’m wearing shorts today.  Yes SHORTS- it’s in the 70s, sunny and perfectly breezy.  It’s still fall here.  So, if you aren’t here yet, get to packing!

According to Travel & Leisure magazine, here are the cities with the Top 10 Best Weather:
1. San Diego

Austin Is The Place To Live- Cleanliness Showcase

November 2, 2007 | 2 Comments

Lake Austin From Mount BonnellYou’ve all heard the saying, “cleanliness is next to godliness,” right?  We agree- who wants to live in a dirty, scummy, trashed out city?  Not Austinites.  We were recently named the 4th Cleanest City in America according to Travel & Leisure’s “America’s Favorite Cities 2007.”  The Keep Austin Beautiful campaign is a locally funded program promoting environmental education and events.  This program is a big part of what keeps our city among the cleanest!

So, thanks to all of you sanitation workers, street cleaners, recycling crews, private property maintainers, and especially those of you who are like us that pick up any random trash while on your daily walk.

Austin Is The Place To Live- Peace & Quiet Showcase

October 31, 2007 | 2 Comments

Austin has peace and quiet- be jealous, be VERY jealousAccording to Travel & Leisure’s “America’s Favorite Cities 2007,”  Austin made out like a bandit!  One of the most important categories to me personally is the peace and quiet showcase.  With so many parks, running trails, private hill top homes and a small town feel, Austin is one of the most peaceful places you can find.  What’s different about Austin than most of the other cities listed is that even in our downtown areas we enjoy a peaceful environment, not just in our parks or suburbs.   How did we rank nationally?

1.  Santa Fe, NM
2.  Portland, OR
3.  Charleston, SC
4.  St. Paul, MN
5.  Seattle, WA
6.  Austin, TX
7.  Denver, CO
8.  San Diego, CA
9.  Honolulu, HI
10. San Antonio, TX

Lake Austin view near Zilker Park in AustinAustin is in the Top 5 cities that are environmentally aware, according to travel magazine Travel & Leisure’s “America’s Favorite Cities 2007? survey.  How did Austin achieve this title?  Laws regarding mandated green spaces, tax breaks for green building, pristine park preservation, water conservation practices city wide and more.  Where does Austin rank as environmentally aware?

1. Portland, OR
2. Seattle, WA
3. San Francisco, CA
4. Austin, TX
5. Denver, CO

Congrats to all of those in Austin that focus on keeping our city beautiful.  For those of you not yet here, come see why we rank so highly!

Austin Is The Place To Live- Food Showcase

October 24, 2007 | Leave a Comment

fork-and-spoon.pngAccording to travel magazine Travel & Leisure’s “America’s Favorite Cities 2007″ survey, Austin is apparently the best place to live if you eat.  I mean it.  Check out how we rank!

Overall Food/Dining
1. Chicago, IL
2. New Orleans, LA
3. Austin, TX
4. New York, NY
5. Philadelphia, PA

What does all that mean?  Let’s see where we rank according to food type in case you are still dubious:

Barbeque
1. Austin, TX

2. San Antonio, TX
3. Nashville, TN
4. Dallas, TX
5. Charleston, SC

And you thought Kansas had the best barbeque?  They don’t have Uncle Billy’s, Salt Lick or Green Mesquite to brag about (and you know we aren’t shy about bragging).  Speaking of bragging, how about affordable dining?

Cheap Eats
1. New Orleans, LA
2. Austin, TX
3. Philadelphia, PA
4. San Antonio, TX
5. Chicago, IL

For cheap eats, we recommend most anything Tex-Mex, we love Rudy’s and the Magnolia Cafe.  But what about after you’re stuffed and you just need a coffee nightcap?

Coffee
1. Seattle, WA (duh)
2. Portland, OR
3. New Orleans, LA
4. San Francisco, CA
5. New York, NY
6. Austin, TX

Not only do we have a Starbucks on every corner, we promote our independent coffee houses such as Austin Java Company, Mozart’s on Lake Austin and (my personal fave) Spider House.  What about if you’re vegan or are trying to focus on eating healthy foods?

Organic Food Consumption
1. San Francisco, CA
2. Seattle, WA
3. Portland, OR
4. Washington, D.C.
5. San Diego, CA
6. Austin, TX

This one makes sense since Whole Foods is headquartered here, our city is centered around a hike and bike trail and fitness is the center of many people’s attention not for reasons of vanity but for health (think of celebrities in Austin like Lance Armstrong, Andy Roddick and the like).

For those of you who live here, you already know that Austin is the crown jewel of places to live, especially if you like consuming food!  Austin ranks in the top of most surveys regarding types of food not only for the quality of the food, the great service, the laid back atmosphere and gorgeous hill country surroundings.  If you haven’t been to Austin yet and you plan on relocating or investing in our fine city, bring an empty stomach!

MicroFinance & Us -The Challenge

September 22, 2007 | 3 Comments

microfinance-748566.jpgWhat is Microfinance:

Microfinance
Small loans to start or expand small businesses given to poor people who are usually not able to borrow money from commercial banks because the amount of money is too small.

Drew Meyers, someone I would like to consider a friend (even if he is someone I don’t get to speak to on a regular basis) is who turned me on to microfinance a few months back.  Our conversation wasn’t a long one, more of his passion on the subject and his advice to google the issue further.  I did, and I was overwhelmed with the idea of a poor guy like me being able to not only have a major impact on people, a community, an economy, but have an interactive role in contributions I make from the heart.  Many people do not give to a charity unless its the check to Church on Sunday, or a major disaster.  There is nothing wrong with that- that is how we’ve all been trained to give.

What’s so very different with microfinance is that it is interactive.  You get to see what your money did for whatever cause you financed- how cool is that? Got $10 $20 $50 bucks? Lend it! Yes, I said $10- could finance a small business!

So here is what we’re going to do.  Single Pointe is going to pick a business from the ever growing list of microfinance opportunities, and from the date of lending the money, we’re going to follow the business and report it to you.

Here is the challenge.  We’re friends with hundreds of bloggers around the world, and we’re challenging these friends to find a business through whatever microfinance venue they choose, and then asking them to challenge their friends, etc…  Not to brag, but to blog about it and build a network of blog love like no other that brings worthy attention to this innovative concept.

Concept breakdown through video:

kerry-lennon-777258.jpgZAP

it had to be said.

The reality is, folks are learning they can get fame from a viral video, especially one with action.  The bigger problem is, some idiots will take it to a new extreme and it just gets creepy.  Andrew Meyer is the victim screaming, but the truth is he claims himself to be a journalist.  Did he stage it?  Should he be felt sorry for?  I think a youtube.com society doesn’t really know any more than we know if the idiot screaming to leave Britney alone was serious or not.  Judging by the group of people in the hall where Andrew was tazed, how they sat there and simply watched- it proves my point.

My initial reaction to the story was- if this was the 60s-70s (a time in which I was yet to be born) all hell would have broken lose in that auditorium.  A room full of liberals (John Kerry was speaking, duh) watched while the kid’s speech was suppressed-ironic?  Why was John Kerry gone when the kid was tazed? He witnessed the kid being drug away.  Very telling.

I’m not speaking about politics, just from a nostalgic point of view.  Sometimes a picture is just a picture.

Seattle Madness - Ride the S.L.U.T.

September 20, 2007 | Leave a Comment

070918_seattle_slut.jpgYou know, as a real estate company there is a very fine line we walk between laid back and professional.  Sometimes, the item you want to talk about just is so funny that our line gets maybe a little blurry but we feel like if this story can be on the news, it can be here too.

So as you read in the title, Seattle residents are proud to stand behind and ride their S.L.U.T.  Even the mayor says the citizens can call their new trolley what they want, so long as they ride it- the $50.5 million dollar street S.L.U.T that is, South Lake Union (Trolley)

A MESSAGE TO AUSTIN CITY LEADERS- Acronyms COUNT and so does the support of local residents.  If they hate your project, you’d better leave no stone unturned in protecting it’s credibility.

Austin’s Hill Country Appeal In Danger?

September 17, 2007 | Leave a Comment

austin-hill-country.jpgI was driving along Crystal Falls & 183 today when I was dramatically reminded that a new Lowes & Starbucks (yes I had to get my Starbucks in there) as well as other shopping and eateries were coming to town.  I remember being excited that Leander had attracted such a grand scale commercial development.  I imagined something that would maybe rival Austin’s Arboretum- my daydream was nothing more than just a daydream.  In fact, all that is left of the dense overgrowth of trees and brush is a single lonely oak tree.  How pathetic.  I remember having this same feeling watching The Domain being built off of Mopac & Braker.  Getting shade while shopping at the Domain is a no easy feat- another concrete jungle.  You see the same thing up in Lakeway at the new Hill Country Galleria, which I’ll talk about another day- just more concrete.

It’s about time that a little restraint be applied to the massive developments in and around Austin.  We’re in danger of selling off what makes Austin so appealing in the first place- its dense trees, and plush woody vignettes.

Reality TV in Austin

August 11, 2007 | 1 Comment

America’s guilty pleasure is officially Reality TV.  We know better than to get invested in something so useless as “The Flavor of Love” or “Big Brother,” but we continue tuning in, don’t we?

What’s even more exciting than actually watching these shows is when you tune into a new one and you recognize all of the landmarks!  Austin is quickly becoming a popular site for Reality TV as it provides an amazing backdrop with mansions on Lake Austin, a beautiful downtown bar and club district, and one of the largest colleges in the world (THE University of Texas, duh)!

Season 16 of the Real World was based in Austin where we met kids mostly transplanted in our club scene from California.

Of course, American Idol stops by Austin on most national tours in finding talent, and why wouldn’t they?  We ARE the Live Music Capital of the world, after all!

The upcoming season of The Bachelor will star one of the partners in ownership of the Chugging Monkey and the soon to be renamed Thirsty Nickel.  Austin’s an obvious choice for filming as we’re consistently named in the Top 5 Dating Cities with a busy singles scene.

Currently, someone named bravofamilychef@yahoo.com is running ads on Craigslist looking for local families who use a private chef and would like to be on reality TV.  We’re thinking since the advertiser has a 310 number (out of the LA area which is where the Bravo channel is headquartered) and their email mentions Bravo that a new show perhaps called “Family Chef” or the likes will debut on Bravo and at least parts will be filmed in Austin… we shall see!

Lastly, we indulged last night in watching this terrible show on VH-1 called “The Pick Up Artist” and started recognizing the neon blue lined skyscraper, our capital and of course the club “The Foundation Room” where the lovable nerds try to pick up ladies and get over their insecurities.  This group of mostly virgins will learn in the Austin clubs how to get a lady.  They will be taught by none other than “Mystery,” a nerd in a black tophat with feathers, who calls himself the “Master Pickup Artist.”

Rachel Ray from Food Network’s “Tasty Travels” and Giada de Laurentis filmed in Austin on one of “Giada’s Weekend Getaways.”  These are not the Reality TV format but we always get giddy when we see our awesome city on TV.  Austin is becoming the 2nd L.A. because it is much less expensive to film here, so get ready to see more of us on the ol’ Tube!

If you’re into the Austin vibe and love the cynical voice of Dudley and Bob in the morning, you’ll also love the modern rock that they’ve finally mixed in with their traditional Classic Rock.

KAMX 94.7—–”Mix 94.7″
If you miss Ace of Base or Counting Crows but also need to hear your Quiet Riot and Pink, Mix 94.7 has a great offering for you.

KKMJ 95.5—–”Magic 95.5″
Is your stuffy boss calling while you’re driving in late to work?  Impress him with Kenny G in the background as you calmly answer your cell.  We won’t tell anyone that you didn’t flip it back to 93.3…

KHFI 96.7—–”Kiss FM”
This is where the cool kids hang out and listen to Top 40 hits.  Most people will tell you to tune into the morning show for Bobby Bones, but we’re die hard Lunchbox fans!  This is our favorite station for the morning drive!

KWTX 97.5—–”Today’s Hit Music”
This is a Waco station, but we pick it up in Leander, Pflugerville, Georgetown and the like.  Don’t tell, but I always get sad when Timbaland or Avril Lavigne fade out when I get closer to downtown- boo!

KVET 98.1—–”98.1 KVET”
One of Austin’s oldest stations, KVET is a great place to go for today’s country hits.  If you’re lucky, you might catch some classic country from time to time!

KHHL 98.9—–”Exitos”
I don’t understand what’s going on, but they speak Spanish and it sure sounds fun!

KASE 100.7—–”KASE 101″
They’d be mad if I said it, but this is the Boot Scootin’ Boogey-ist station in town!  Faith Hill and Rascal Flatts grace these soundwaves- what more could you ask for?

KROX 101.5—–”101-X”
I used to try to be cool by listening to Austin’s Modern Rock station, but I gave up.  If YOU are a true alternative type, you’ll love that they play White Stripe and Pearl Jam in one sitting- rock on!

KPEZ 102.3—–”The River”
Positive music appropriate for when the young’ns are in the car.  Although this station plays all sorts of contemporary “positive” music, it is primarily modern Christian music.

KBPA 103.5—–”Bob FM”
Bob abuses the “shuffle” function on his million-disc CD changer and we LIKE that!  Bob can’t claim to be a specific type of station because he plays EVERYTHING- really!

KXBT 104.3—–”La Que Buena”
This station was formerly a rap station, so I still get confused when I flick over to the Tejano tunes, but sometimes I just feel like rockin’ out to Tejano!

KXXS 104.9—–”The Beat”
You’ll see “The Beat” downtown a lot; they play Hip Hop and Rap and they’ll sometimes spice it up with some sexy R&B.

KFMK 105.9—–”Jammin’ 105.9″
Playing hits from the 80’s and 90’s, aiming to take you back to those high school days (or college, or parenthood, whatever).  They play “rhythmic adult contemporary” which I learned 23 seconds ago means a mix of classic dance flashbacks, pop, etc… wikipedia basically says it’s everything but rap.  Minus the fancy words, we LOVE this channel!  Mix it up with Prince, Rihanna, Madonna, Enrique, and DJ Jazzy Jeff… I could go on…

KITY 106.3—–”The Oldies Station”
This is an expanded version of the soundtrack to Forrest Gump- super hip 1969 style Beatles Oldies, not that 20’s bugles oldies.  Austin is cool and loves thinking back to the good ol’ days!

KGSR 107.1—–”Radio Austin”
KGSR is often a concert sponsor and you’ll hear Austin greats alongside national stars performing adult contemporary tunes.

KINV 107.7—–”Recuerdo”
This is “Regional Mexican” music and talk radio and is run by the Univision Corporation.  We see a lot of 107.7 bumper stickers around town!

So, there you have it.  What’s YOUR favorite station? We couldn’t pick one, so we brought them all to you!  So next time you’re in the car, try something new- you might find your new favorite sound!
